Surprise Proposal Photography @ Stauffer Library, Queen’s University – Jessica and Derek
Jessica was one of my son’s favorite day care teachers (she’s now a school teacher.) I’d photographed her and her sisters as a present for their parents in 2012. When Derek called saying he was going to propose and wanted me to photograph it for him I was pretty excited.
They met via likealittle – a now defunct social network site designed to allow students to post anonymous flirts with people they’d seen on college and university campuses. Their story was featured in the Toronto Star in 2011.
I met Derek at the Stauffer LiIbrary and he explained how he’d arranged a scavenger hunt with several of their closest friends. Each friend would take Jessica around the city to locations they frequent to gather another clue, with the final destination being “where it all began.” After an hour of traveling around town Jessica found the last clue and knew to head up the spiral stairs at Stauffer, unaware of what was waiting for her.
As she crossed the stacks to the spot where she’d first seen Derek sitting, studying on an all nighter a few years before, he got down on his knee and asked her to marry him.
These two teachers are set to be married in October of 2015 and I’m giddy to shoot it, and to have had a bit part in their journey together.
